What things shoul I include ina cover letter?

I have to create a cover letter and resume for my computer applications class. What things should I include in this? I am having the most trouble with the cover letter.|||At the top put your address, the date, and then the addressee's name and address.

The cover needs to express your interest in a certain thing you are trying to attain (most often a job). You start off by addressing the position and your interest and follow up with something to engage the reader, and pull them into the letter itself. Follow it up by forecasting the rest of your letter.

"I am very interested in interning at (wherever) as a(n) (whatever). I was excited to hear you were interviewing for this position, as I feel I am a great candidate given my extensive experience working as a member of a team, communicating with clients, and solving problems utilizing critical thinking."

The forecasting is very important because a business person will tend to scan the letter. Make sure everything fits with the requirements of the position and try and include as much detail as possible. Divide your paper into paragraphs that are parallel with your forcasting sentence, in my example: extensive experience working as a member of a team, communicating with clients, and solving problems utilizing critical thinking. Focus on yourself, but make sure to relate everything back to the position if at all possible.

Finish with a thank you for reading the letter or coming to the interview or whatever and include a "feel free to contact me" line. Typical convention puts "sincerely" with 3 lines following for room for a signature and then your typed name. If you are putting the cover letter and the resume together, put "Encl." 2 lines below your name to signify there is another paper that goes with the cover letter.|||You should include: your contact information (you'll probably already have your address in the return address area, but you can list a phone number), what enclosures are included within the packet (application, resume, etc), your overall objective (what kind of job you're hoping to land, perhaps with a brief explanation why), and thanks to the receiver for considering your application. Make sure to use appropriate business letter format (usually automatic within word processing programs - there are templates you can use). Hope that helps.
