Why are some words ina story or book initialized ?

I never understood why? Can someone please explain it. I probularly remember why when someone says it.|||There's probably more than one answer to this question depending on the book. But usually in contemporary writing, italics are used to distinguish the character's actual thoughts from the narration of the story. Since thoughts are not spoken, they aren't put inside quotation marks. But thoughts are different from narration so some writers might italicize them.

Sometimes when the book is written in first person present tense, the thoughts are seamlessly included in the narration and therefore no italics are used. It just depends on the author's (or perhaps the editor's) preference.

In other instances, italics might be used when quoting something else like a song or a written note.|||to show emphasis on something or sometimes to show they are being sarcastic (i use this method all the time)

sometimes words in a story are italized becasue it is the name of a book or song

hope this helps you out|||What do you mean 'initialized'? Like someone put their initials on them?

Or do you mean 'italicized'?

Italics are used to show emphasis. Some writers use it to show thoughts.

Many editors do frown on using them, though.|||do you meani italicized? Its because it's a word thats supposed to be stressed in speech. answer mine?
